Fear and Misery of the Third Reichappeared as a series of vignettes in Prague in 1938, written by Bertolt Brecht in exile about what everyday life in Germany was like between 1933 and 1938, based on witnesses’ accounts and newspaper clippings. It presents everyday people from the petty bourgeoisie and the upper classes alike. Scenes of varying length demonstrate how politics creeps into people’s lives, hearts, minds; how it affects their personalities; what existing traits it confirms and reinforces.
